Has Income Segregation Really Increased? Bias and Bias Correction in Sample-Based Segregation Estimates

چکیده
Several recent studies have concluded that residential segregation by income in the U.S. has increased in the decades since 1970, including a significant increase after 2000. Income segregation measures, however, are biased upwards when based on sample data. This is a potential concern because the sampling rate of the American Community Survey (ACS)—from which post-2000 income segregation estimates are constructed—was lower than that of the earlier decennial Censuses. This raises the possibility that the apparent increase in income segregation post-2000 simply reflects increased upward bias in the estimates from the ACS, and the estimated increase may therefore be inaccurate. In this paper, we first derive formulas describing the approximate sampling bias in two measures of segregation. Next, using Monte Carlo simulations, we show that the bias-corrected estimators eliminate virtually all of the bias in segregation estimates in most cases of practical interest, although the correction fails to eliminate bias in some cases when the population is unevenly distributed among geographic units and the average within-unit samples are very small. We then use the bias-corrected estimators to produce unbiased estimates of the trends in income segregation over the last four decades in large U.S. metropolitan areas. Using these corrected estimates, we replicate the central analyses in four prior papers on income segregation. We find that the primary conclusions from these papers remain unchanged, although the true increase in income segregation among families after 2000 was only half as large as that reported in earlier work. Despite this revision, our replications confirm that income segregation has increased sharply among families with children in recent decades, and that income inequality is a strong and consistent predictor of income segregation.

An Application of Non-response Bias Reduction Using Propensity Score Methods
In many statistical studies some units do not respond to a number or all of the questions. This situation causes a problem called non-response. Bias and variance inflation are two important consequences of non-response in surveys. Although increasing the sample size can prevented variance inflation, but cannot necessary adjust for the non-response bias. Therefore a number of methods ...
متن کاملA comparative study of quantitative mapping methods for bias correction of ERA5 reanalysis precipitation data
This study evaluates the ability of different quantitative mapping (QM) methods as a bias correction technique for ERA5 reanalysis precipitation data. Climate type and geographical location can affect the performance of the bias correction method due to differences in precipitation characteristics. For this purpose, ERA5 reanalysis precipitation data for the years 1989-2019 for 10 selected syno...
متن کاملThe Measure of Residential Segregation of Socio-Economic Groups by Using Multigroup Indices in Shiraz City
Urban segregation has been a problem of many cities of the world. Many researchers have interested in the urban segregation issues. Urban segregation has strongly concentrated poverty and created underclass. Different types of urban segregation exist, including income and racial or ethnical segregation, and depending on the contextual mechanisms within a city. To understand and plan a better co...

This paper examines the relationship between racial segregation and poverty. Using data primarily from the 2000 Census, I control extensively for metropolitan area characteristics and other factors. In addition, I use metropolitan area physical geography characteristics as instruments for racial segregation as one approach to address the problem of endogeneity bias. I find significant and posit...
متن کاملThe robustness of recombination frequency estimates in intercrosses with dominant markers.
The robustness of the maximum likelihood estimates of recombination frequencies has been investigated in double intercrosses with complete dominance at both loci. The robustness was investigated with respect to bias in the recombination frequency estimates due to: (1) limited sample sizes, (2) heterogeneity in recombination frequencies between sexes or among meioses and (3) factors that distort...
